oh sweet sweet staples!!
Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 05:26PM I am in looooooooooooove with staples! I can't believe it took me so long to incorporate them sooner into my artsy making. Think about it, they are like instant glue! but with out any goo! (hey, that rhymes! If only I could sing I would make a song to praise their glory!) And they are made of metal! and also, they work GREAT WITH PAINT! You can use them to stick together lots and lots of pieces of paper, and plastic, and even a little cardboard if they're on the mood for it!
They are just the coolest thing. I went staple-crazy while thinking how to stick together this plastic sheet I found in the craft section of Wal-Mart. (quick note: I LOVE WAL-MART! and don't tell me not to buy there for all the crazy abusing things they do, I love it, damn it, I love that store! I can't help myself, sorry)
This plastic thing is actually intended to be something you use to make a stencil. You're supposed to draw or trace a shape, cut it out and use it for stenciling. It has a rough side and a smooth side, I'm using the rougher side as a substrate for acrylic paint. I liked how you can put something in the back and see the text underneath. For this piece, I used a flattened out cardboard coffee cup (from, you guessed it, my beloved Cafe Mia!) and a few papers from a book on iris reading. Have you heard about this thing? There are people out there who sit you on a chair, see your iris, you know that colored thing in your eye, and claim they can tell you if you suffer from the liver, a bad case of gout, or maybe a bad case of the evil eye. I think it's just BS, but the drawings were so so fantastic. All the divisions and subdivisions of a tiny eye representing different-crazy things, I couldn't resist the diagrams...
ANYWAY, returning to the construction of this piece.... I stapled all the paper and plastic layers, added acrylic paint, drew a little bit with black india ink, color pencils, etc, whatever I could find. I then tried to find it a good frame, and found a cigar box that fitted it perfectly! I mounted the painting on tiny wooden cubes with -get this- A GLUE GUN!! HA! I am unstoppable in my craftiness!! and then mounted this whole thing on the cigar box with MORE GLUE GUN MAGIC!
It has been FOR. E. VER since I used a glue gun, I didn't actually knew I owned one. I think I bought it some years ago while putting together the first Christmas Extravaganza that happened to this house when my daughter was born. That year the crafty-DIY-Christmas-fairy bomb went off all over the house, it was not pretty, people, all I have left now is that glue gun and a packet of a 100 99 little glue gun refills.
So, here you have it! another piece that will be going up on the exhibit that I was supposed to hang LAST week and didn't. Mainly because I have been not very well organized lately, you see... we have grandma visiting for a couple of weeks, Thing One just graduated from Preschool, and Thing Two has a birthday tomorrow!!! (oh, we love Dr. Seuss around here) He is turning THREE!! three whole years! We are so very excited, and of course these momentous events take front and center of my very limited attention span, so please, bare with me while I am in the midst of trying to put together a birthday celebration, family visiting, art show hanging over my head at all times, trying to figure out a way to do the piñata thing with out a trip to the emergency room (not that we have any experience with things like that!), and also writing a blog post at midnight with a less that perfect command of the English language. (remind me to hit the spell check button thing before I go)
So anyway, more pictures! I know I always want to see more pictures of everything!! so here ya go!

So what crazy abusing things do Walmart do? I'm curious now! I need to know!
Also, love the staples, brilliant!
And lastly, love pinatas. We used to make them every year for our birthdays when we were kids. My mom used to throw elaborately themed parties, so we got to decide what we wanted on our pinata, cabbage patch kids or dinosaurs, etc. Have fun celebrating this week :)
I love you.
Of course I love Walmart too. Ive got one right across the street and make midnight trips regularly! :)
Good luck with the birthday party. Panatas...eesh...I dont dare...
