Found Art Tuesday March 6, 2007: BEAUTY

This week as I was thinking about "beauty" I thought of doing a personal piece. Since beauty is so subjective I was going to make a list of things that say beauty to me. You know.. nature, my favorite place, my favorite building... and then I thought that these are subjective too. Depends on my mood, the time of year, the time of day. What is beautiful to me can be totally mundane and non interesting to someone else. Beauty is a concept you have to compare with something else. Something ugly. And I am sure only we humans see the world this way. Only we can judge something and decide its beautiful and pleasing, or just plain ugly, uninteresting. This is when the work turned into an interpretation of what I consider beautiful as something manipulated by the human being. We label things, it's our nature. The labels we use are sometimes guided by our experiences, desires, hopes. I like to see architecture. I like the way people have manipulated the materials found in nature and had given them a new life. A rock is no longer just a rock. It's a part of a wall. Has a purpose, a meaning. This is beautiful to me. Among so so many other things.
For this piece I used foam board as a support. I used acrylics and for the background and added texture applying tracing paper. I drew a house of some kind and also a paper butterfly. These butterflies I've seen somewhere in the internet I can't think of where, but I think it worked well with the topic since butterflies are so beautiful to me and made with a map gives her a whole new meaning. (a traveling butterfly...) I drew some people in there too since beauty is something to be shared. If you think something is worth taking a look because of it's beauty, chances are you will try to find someone who agrees with you, and maybe marry him and later have two little butterflies of your own to light up the rest of your life.

Plese visit Kathy La Rocco's blog to see her "beauty" Found Art piece.
