Feb 27 2006: PEACE
"Peace is in our hands" Get it?
This is a card, (postcard size) made for this week's Found Art Tuesday project. The topic is "Peace". It's all in the symbols. The open hand, a symbol of non aggression, the red, a reminder of blood. The text, an expression of human intelligence and yet, when you read what it says, conflict comes to mind.
I traced the hand in watercolor paper and painted it, then I tried to remember some of the countries that have been at war at any point in time, the idea was to get a sense of conflict, combined with the red color. I then cut the hand and placed it in a new piece of watercolor paper. I used pins to attach it, as to give the feeling that it's something that can be changed, set free. there's also the quote: "There is no way to Peace. Peace is the way" by Ghandi.
Originally I was going to do something that expressed the search for inner peace, the idea that world peace can start with ourselves, being aware of other's needs, helping others in our community, but somehow I got pulled this way. It makes me feel so small to think of all the pain going on in the world and that there's nothing I can do to stop any of it. It's something I can't control but I won't let this fear control me either, It empowers me to wake up and be more aware. Aware of the food I have in my table that others don't, of the calmness I experience everyday and others only dream of. And now that I'm aware... what needs to be done? how can I help?
