remeber when you were 10 years old?

patio abuelos.jpgThis is a picture I took of the garden at my grandparent's house in Monterrey, I remember doing so many things here when I was growing up almost all of them with my cousin Malena who is only a year younger than me.  I am the oldest of about 30 grandkids, so there were always little kids around, but me and Malena were companions in mischief, we would jump the wall on one side of the garden and go visit the neighbors next door, a family of 7 kids! and we would wander the neighborhood, go to the maternity hospital that is just around the corner, take the elevator to the third floor and see the newborn babies, then go outside and walk about 5 blocks to the little store, el caballito, where you could get a cold soda or an ice cream pop. We went everywhere! and then her mom would drive us around town and because I was visiting for the summer (I grew up in Mexico City) they took me everywhere they thought of, the mall, the bowling alley, the ice skate ring. I remember one time when we were riding in the back seat of the car when we were just about 10 or so, (back before car seats for kids were even invented) and there had been a crash in the street, and my aunt was driving and told us to get down while we were driving past the crashed cars so that we wouldn't see anything and get traumatized for life, and we got down and of course we peeked and tried to see something, each of us from our back window, and we couldn't see anything, all I could see was that there was an ambulance there and that was it. I don't think she saw anything, but she told me she had seen this bleeding guy with glass all over his head and that he was screaming or something, and to not seem lame, I said I saw this guy with his shirt all bloody and a broken leg... My aunt was so mortified she didn't knew what to do, we got to our grand parent's house and told everybody about the crash and the bloody survivors and how a helicopter was there to take them to the hospital, etc, etc... Needless to say there weren't many more car rides that summer, she knew we had made it all up but I don't think she told anyone, I think she thought it was a little interesting to have this two 10 year olds with such a vivid imagination. maybe we had seen too many scary movies? anyway this is the way I remember it, like so many other things that come to my mind when I visit this old house so filled with memories of when I was growing up. Today my cousin lives in Barcelona, she's married to a guy from Spain, Carlos, and I live in the U.S. so we don't get to see each other until Christmas, and when we do, sometimes we're 10 again, looking for places to go and talk and not be overheard by the grown ups! I love you Malena, buena suerte con tu pequeña en tu panza, ya veras que todo saldra muy bien. Te veo en Navidad, besos!
